TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

I spend every waking minute reading. I go through several books a week and usually read the epilogue after the prologue.I know, I know.. It’s my obsessive character which helps and hinders me in everything I do. Word of advice, never borrow a book from me – the writer in me means every book is graffitied with illegible notes in the margins. It will drive you nuts.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN SNOWLAND JOURNEYS?

I’ve been teaching for 15 years in state schools across London in various capacities. Before I had my children, I was Head of PSHE, and more recently I designed lesson plans for Sierra Leone’s first ever History KS3 Curriculum. Zara asked me if I would consider doing a Geography lesson plan to teach UK students about life in Nepal, and once we started working together on our Snowland Journeys Lockdown Life Lessons, I never left.

EXPLAIN A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR ROLE AT SNOWLAND JOURNEYS?

I’m Fundraising Manager so essentially, I write grant proposals in an effort to raise money for Snowland Journeys. I love writing the proposals, but make no mistake it requires a lot of research, data collection, talking and writing to be successful. Added to the that I am also working on Snowland Journeys English, History and Religious Education lessons for KS3 and KS4.

YOU HAVE ALSO BEEN CREATING LOCKDOWN LIFE LESSONS?

Lockdown has been a shock for everyone, but if you look around the world others have been living in similar situations for ages. This seemed the perfect time to introduce the kids from Nepal and the remarkable lives they live to the UK. It’s all about learning life skills and coping strategies from them. Presumably our lockdown will end – the Nepalese kids live bound by their rules for up to ten years.

HAVE YOU FOUND FUNDRAISING DURING A PANDEMIC TOUGH?

Absolutely. The fact that fundraising organisations are setting up ‘Resilience Workshops’ for free gives you some idea how tough it is. So many grants are simply on hold or not accepting new bids. The only thing to do is keep going. It’s a gamble -a bit like living in Las Vegas with no money chips, but I love a challenge!

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING FOR SNOW LAND JOURNEYS?

It’s a real privilege to work for an organisation knowing you make an immediate difference to someone’s life. Snowland Journeys combines all my previous jobs- teaching, writer and researcher and without a doubt it’s a cause I believe in 100%. Obviously, everyone has a role to play in society, but I’ve always liked working on the frontlines – it keeps me sane, or drives me insane. I guess it depends on your view point.

DO YOU HAVE A PARTY TRICK?

Party tricks are always supplied by my youngest son Kurt, the fledgling magician, but I can flip an egg in a shot glass – who needs a CV if you can do that?
